Kabi Lungchok – Historical Site

Kabi Lungchok, also spelled Kabi Longtsok, is a historical site in the forested area of Kabi, a peaceful village in North Sikkim.

It is 19 km from Gangtok, the capital city, and takes about 45 minutes to reach by car. This site marks the agreement between the indigenous Lepcha Tribe and the Bhutias, who migrated from Tibet.

They pledged a “Blood Brotherhood” to ensure peaceful coexistence in Sikkim.

Kabi Lungchok History

In the 13th century, Kye Bumsa, a prince from the Minyak House in Kham, Eastern Tibet, met ThekongTek, the religious leader of the Lepchas, at this site.

They gathered with their followers and pledged a bond of blood brotherhood between their two races.

To mark this event, they called upon the valley’s spirits as witnesses. They vowed that their brotherhood would last as long as the Rangeet River flowed and Mount Kanchenjunga stood.

As a ritual, they placed their feet in a vessel filled with animal blood and erected a stone to symbolize their oath.

Because of this historical event, the people of Sikkim consider KabiLungchok a sacred site.

Attractions and Activities

The entrance to this religious site is next to the roadside in Kabi Village. After passing through the gate, you will follow a stone pathway surrounded by forest.

In about five minutes, this path leads to the main site. This elevated area features a large statue at its center, depicting Khye Bumsa, The kong Tek, and his wife.

The site is not well-maintained, so most tourists do not include it in their travel plans for North Sikkim.
