Darjeeling Zoo (Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park)

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, also known as Darjeeling Zoo, was established on August 14, 1958, in the Birch Hill area of Darjeeling.

It was founded under the Department of Education of the Government of West Bengal to help you learn about and support the conservation of Himalayan wildlife.

Initially called the Himalayan Zoological Park, it was renamed in 1975 when Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, dedicated it to Padmaja Naidu, former Governor of West Bengal.

Covering 67.56 acres at an altitude of 7,000 feet, this is the largest high-altitude zoo in India.

Key Attractions at Darjeeling Zoo

Darjeeling Zoo specializes in breeding and conserving rare Himalayan animals, including the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, and Tibetan Wolf.

It is the only specialized zoo in India and has gained international recognition for its conservation efforts.

In 2014, it became the first Indian zoo to receive the prestigious ‘The Earth Heroes’ award from the Royal Bank of Scotland in partnership with the British Government.

As you explore the zoo, you will find more than 200 species of trees, shrubs, medicinal plants, and climbers, including 60 varieties of orchids.

Some oak trees in the park are over 100 years old, along with Birch, Alder, and Castanopsis species.

If you love animals, you can take part in the zoo’s ‘Adoption Program.’ You can adopt an animal by covering its care expenses through an agreement with the zoo’s management.

This gives you the chance to support wildlife conservation while directly contributing to the well-being of these animals.

At the zoo, you can see rare species like the Red Panda and Snow Leopard in a semi-natural environment, making it an exciting way to learn more about Himalayan wildlife.
