Tiger Hill stands at an altitude of 2,600 meters and is the highest point in Darjeeling.
It is located around 11 km from the main town, just above Ghum, which has the highest railway station in India.
Tiger Hill is well known for its clear sunrise views and the sight of Mt. Kanchenjunga. The location offers a wide view of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks and is a top choice for travelers visiting Darjeeling.
The route to the hill runs through the narrow road of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, which is also popular with trekkers.
The area is part of a nature reserve and is maintained by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), earlier called the DGHC.
Main Attractions at Tiger Hill
1. The Journey and Scenic Beauty
The road to Tiger Hill is uneven and can be challenging, but the tall pine trees and forest views make the ride worthwhile.
A viewing tower stands at the top, where visitors gather to watch the sunrise.
2. Why the Sunrise Is Special
Many people ask why the sunrise here is so popular and worth the early wake-up. The answer lies in the view.
As the sun rises slowly over the horizon, it lights up the snowy Himalayan range. The peaks begin to glow like polished silver.
The sky shifts from dark blue to bright shades of orange and blue. The full view feels magical and leaves a strong impression on anyone who sees it.
3. Chance to See Mount Everest
On a clear morning, Mount Everest—located 225 km away and standing 8,848 meters tall—can sometimes be seen.
Mount Makalu, which is 8,464 meters high, is also visible on days with good visibility.
Fresh air, peaceful surroundings, bird sounds, and the golden view of Mount Kanchenjunga create an unforgettable moment at the top.

Best Time to Visit Tiger Hill
Avoid the monsoon months as the sky is usually cloudy and rainfall is frequent, which blocks the mountain view. The best time to visit is:

These months offer higher chances of clear skies. Winter (December to February) is also good, but heavy fog during extreme cold can reduce visibility.
